Sunan at-Tirmithiy كتاب الصلاة باب ما جاء فى التسليم فى الصلاة
وَرَوَى سُفْيَانُ الثَّوْرِىُّ وَغَيْرُهُ عَنْ أَبِى إِسْحَاقَ عَنْ عَاصِمِ بْنِ ضَمْرَةَ عَنْ عَلِىٍّ قَالَ الْوِتْرُ لَيْسَ بِحَتْمٍ كَهَيْئَةِ الصَّلاَةِ الْمَكْتُوبَةِ وَلَكِنْ سُنَّةٌ سَنَّهَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم. حَدَّثَنَا بِذَلِكَ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ بَشَّارٍ حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ مَهْدِىٍّ عَنْ سُفْيَانَ عَنْ أَبِى إِسْحَاقَ. وَهَذَا أَصَحُّ مِنْ حَدِيثِ أَبِى بَكْرِ بْنِ عَيَّاشٍ. وَقَدْ رَوَاهُ مَنْصُورُ بْنُ الْمُعْتَمِرِ عَنْ أَبِى إِسْحَاقَ نَحْوَ رِوَايَةِ أَبِى بَكْرِ بْنِ عَيَّاشٍ.
'Alī Ibn-Abī-Ṭālib said, "The odd-numbered prayer (1) is not an obligation like prescribed prayers are, but a sunnah (the Prophet's tradition) that the Messenger of God, peace and blessings of God be upon him, introduced."
(1): The voluntary night prayer that ends a person's worship for that day, and is performed in an odd number of prayer units (one unit, three units, etc.)
