Abdullāh Ibn-‘Umar related that a man asked the Prophet, peace and blessings of God be upon him, “Where do we start [consecration (1)], Messenger of God?” The latter replied, “The people of Madīnah start from Thul-Ḥulayfah (2), the people of the Levant (or Greater Syria) from al-Juḥfah (3), and the people of Najd from Qarn (4).” Ibn-‘Umar added, “And they say that the people of Yemen [are to start consecration] from Yalamlam (5).”
(iḥrām) A state of sanctity for the rituals of pilgrimage Thul-Ḥulayfah is a place about two hundred miles north of Makkah. Also known by the name Abyār 'Alī, Thul-Ḥulayfah is the furthest place appointed as the start of consecration. Al-Juḥfah, now known as Rābigh, is one hundred and sixteen miles north-west of Makkah. Qarn, known as Qarn-il-Manāzil, lies fifty miles east of Makkah and is the closest place to start consecration. Another place, appointed for consecration for people coming from the east, is Thātu-'Irq, which lies fifty five miles north-east of Makkah. Yalamlam, also known as As-Sa'diyyah, lies eighty miles south of Makkah.
