Abu-Hurayrah said, "The Messenger of God, peace and blessings of God be upon him, said, 'Whoever fasts [the month of] Ramadān and establishes its voluntary night prayers - out of faith(1) and hope for reward [from God] - then all his past sins will be forgiven(2). And whoever performs voluntary night prayers on the Glorious Night of Determination(3) - out of faith and hope for reward [from God]—then all his past sins will be forgiven. Footnotes (1): i.e. believing that it is a religious obligation and one of the pillars of Islām, and that God has promised to reward those who fast. (2): Except major sins. (3): The night during which the Qur'ān was first revealed to prophet Muhammad. It occurs on one of the last ten nights of Ramadān, though God only knows which. The Qur'ān states that on this night, God determines the course of the world and all human affairs for the coming year.
