"The Messenger of God, peace and blessings of God be upon him, said, 'When it is the first night of the month of Ramadān, the devils and most evil jinns (1) are chained. The gates of Hell are firmly locked, such that none remains open; and the gates of Paradise are flung open, such that none remains closed. A caller proclaims, "Seeker of good, advance! Seeker of evil, withold!" and there are many whom God frees from Fire; and that is every night [of the month] (2).'"(3) Footnotes (1): invisible creatures of fire. (2): alternatively, the phrase, "and that happens every night [of the month]", could also include the proclamation of the caller. (3): This hadīth refers to people's sound instinct (الفطرة السليمة)that guides them to refrain during Ramadan from listening to the devils' temptations and encourages them towards things that lead them to heaven.
