MUHAMMAD’S TEACHINGS TO MANKIND

ḤADĪTH OF THE DAY

“ Zayd Ibn-Othay' said, "I asked 'Alī (1), 'What have you been dispatched with [during the pilgrimage]?' He replied, 'With four: none shall enter Paradise except a believing soul; no one should circumambulate the Ka'bah (2) naked (3); Muslims and polytheists shall not congregate [for pilgrimage] after this year (4); and any covenant with the Prophet, peace and blessings of God be upon him, is valid for its duration. If the covenant does not have a duration, then it is valid for four months.'" حَدَّثَنَا بِشْرُ بْنُ مُعَاذٍ الْبَصْرِىُّ حَدَّثَنَا إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْمَلِكِ بْنِ أَبِى مَحْذُورَةَ قَالَ أَخْبَرَنِى أَبِى وَجَدِّى جَمِيعًا عَنْ أَبِى مَحْذُورَةَ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم أَقْعَدَهُ وَأَلْقَى عَلَيْهِ الأَذَانَ حَرْفًا حَرْفًا. قَالَ إِبْرَاهِيمُ مِثْلَ أَذَانِنَا. قَالَ بِشْرٌ فَقُلْتُ لَهُ أَعِدْ عَلَىَّ. فَوَصَفَ الأَذَانَ بِالتَّرْجِيعِ. قَالَ أَبُو عِيسَى حَدِيثُ أَبِى مَحْذُورَةَ فِى الأَذَانِ حَدِيثٌ صَحِيحٌ. وَقَدْ رُوِىَ عَنْهُ مِنْ غَيْرِ وَجْهٍ. وَعَلَيْهِ الْعَمَلُ بِمَكَّةَ وَهُوَ قَوْلُ الشَّافِعِىِّ.

حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو مُوسَى مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْمُثَنَّى حَدَّثَنَا عَفَّانُ حَدَّثَنَا هَمَّامٌ عَنْ عَامِرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْوَاحِدِ الأَحْوَلِ عَنْ مَكْحُولٍ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ مُحَيْرِيزٍ عَنْ أَبِى مَحْذُورَةَ أَنَّ النَّبِىَّ صلى الله عليه وسلم عَلَّمَهُ الأَذَانَ تِسْعَ عَشْرَةَ كَلِمَةً وَالإِقَامَةَ سَبْعَ عَشْرَةَ كَلِمَةً. قَالَ أَبُو عِيسَى هَذَا حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ صَحِيحٌ. وَأَبُو مَحْذُورَةَ اسْمُهُ سَمُرَةُ بْنُ مِعْيَرٍ. وَقَدْ ذَهَبَ بَعْضُ أَهْلِ الْعِلْمِ إِلَى هَذَا فِى الأَذَانِ. وَقَدْ رُوِىَ عَنْ أَبِى مَحْذُورَةَ أَنَّهُ كَانَ يُفْرِدُ الإِقَامَةَ.

Abu-Mahthūrah said that the call to prayer the Prophet, peace and blessings of God be upon him, taught him was nineteen phrases and the call to the start of prayer (1) was seventeen phrases. (1) The call to the start of prayer (iqāmah) is a shorter and quicker version of the call to prayer (athān) that is said to let people know that the prayer is about to start.
