ḤADĪTH OF THE DAY

The Messenger of God, peace and blessings of God be upon him, said, "Three [things] I swear by, and I am telling you a statement for you to learn." He said, "A bondsman’s wealth is never decreased by charity; no bondsman is ever wronged, and endures with patience, without God giving him (1) greater honor; and no bondsman opens the door of asking [people], without God opening for him a door of poverty- or he said a similar word (2)." He continued, "And I am telling you a statement for you to learn. Indeed, there are four types of people in the worldly life. A bondsman whom God has sustained with wealth and knowledge, so he is mindful of his Lord in [using] them; he upholds kinship ties and acknowledges the rights of God over him. Such [a person] is in the best of ranks. And a bondsman whom God has sustained with knowledge but not wealth, and he sincerely says, ' Had I possessed wealth, I would have acted like that person.' Then he is deserving of his intention, and both are equally rewarded. And a bondsman whom God has sustained with wealth but not knowledge, so he squanders his wealth in ignorance and is not mindful of his Lord in [using] it, nor does he uphold kinship ties, or acknowledge the rights of God over him. Such [a person] is in the vilest of ranks. And there is a bondsman whom God has neither sustained with wealth nor with knowledge and he says, 'Had I possessed wealth, I would have acted like that person.' Then he is deserving of his intention, and both will bear an equal burden. Sunan at-Tirmithiy كتاب الزكاة باب ما جاء أن فى المال حقا سوى الزكاة

حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مَدُّويَهْ حَدَّثَنَا الأَسْوَدُ بْنُ عَامِرٍ عَنْ شَرِيكٍ عَنْ أَبِى حَمْزَةَ عَنِ الشَّعْبِىِّ عَنْ فَاطِمَةَ بِنْتِ قَيْسٍ قَالَتْ سَأَلْتُ أَوْ سُئِلَ النَّبِىُّ صلى الله عليه وسلم عَنِ الزَّكَاةِ فَقَالَ إِنَّ فِى الْمَالِ لَحَقًّا سِوَى الزَّكَاةِ. ثُمَّ تَلاَ هَذِهِ الآيَةَ الَّتِى فِى الْبَقَرَةِ لَيْسَ الْبِرَّ أَنْ تُوَلُّوا وُجُوهَكُمْ الآيَةَ.
The Prophet, peace and blessings of God be upon him, was asked about prescribed almsgiving (1), so he said, "Indeed, there are rights prescribed on one's wealth(2) other than almsgiving." Then he recited this Qur'anic verse, which is in [the Chapter of] al-Baqarah: "Righteousness is not that you turn your faces toward...etc." (2 [al-Baqarah]:177)."
(1) (Zakāh) One of the five pillars of Islām: It is a calculated proportion of a Muslim's wealth that is paid annually for the benefit of the needy. It is due on certain assets, once their value reaches a certain threshold and the calculation varies according to the nature of the asset. (2) It is a religious obligation to give charity: 1- in the compulsory form of almsgiving prescribed by God upon His Bondsmen; 2- as a moral obligation in order for the Bondsman to protect himself "from the stinginess of his [own] soul" (59 [al-Hashr]:9). (3) The pertinent part of the verse is: "Righteousness is not that you turn your faces toward the east or the west, but [true] righteousness is [in] one who believes in God , the Last Day, the angels, the Book, and the prophets and gives wealth, in spite of love for it, to relatives, orphans, the needy, the traveler, those who ask [for help], and for freeing slaves; [and who] establishes prayer and gives zakāt;... (2 [al-Baqarah]:177)."
