Sunan at-Tirmithiy كتاب الزهد باب فى التوكل على الله
حَدَّثَنَا عَلِىُّ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ الْكِنْدِىُّ حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ الْمُبَارَكِ عَنْ حَيْوَةَ بْنِ شُرَيْحٍ عَنْ بَكْرِ بْنِ عَمْرٍو عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ هُبَيْرَةَ عَنْ أَبِى تَمِيمٍ الْجَيْشَانِىِّ عَنْ عُمَرَ بْنِ الْخَطَّابِ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم لَوْ أَنَّكُمْ كُنْتُمْ تَوَكَّلُونَ عَلَى اللَّهِ حَقَّ تَوَكُّلِهِ لَرُزِقْتُمْ كَمَا تُرْزَقُ الطَّيْرُ تَغْدُو خِمَاصًا وَتَرُوحُ بِطَانًا. قَالَ أَبُو عِيسَى هَذَا حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ صَحِيحٌ لاَ نَعْرِفُهُ إِلاَّ مِنْ هَذَا الْوَجْهِ. وَأَبُو تَمِيمٍ الْجَيْشَانِىُّ اسْمُهُ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مَالِكٍ.
The Messenger of God, peace and blessings of God be upon him, said, "If only you were to trust and rely on God as He ought to be trusted and relied on, you would have been provided with sustenance just as the birds are: they set out hungry in the early morning and return full-bellied in the afternoon."
This ḥadīth does not imply that we should remain idle while waiting for God's sustenance rather seeking it while trusting that God is the Sustainer.
