Sunan at-Tirmithiy كتاب الزهد باب ما جاء فى قصر الأمل

حَدَّثَنَا سُوَيْدُ بْنُ نَصْرٍ أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ الْمُبَارَكِ عَنْ حَمَّادِ بْنِ سَلَمَةَ عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ أَبِى بَكْرِ بْنِ أَنَسٍ عَنْ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم هَذَا ابْنُ آدَمَ وَهَذَا أَجَلُهُ. وَوَضَعَ يَدَهُ عِنْدَ قَفَاهُ ثُمَّ بَسَطَهَا فَقَالَ وَثَمَّ أَمَلُهُ وَثَمَّ أَمَلُهُ وَثَمَّ أَمَلُهُ. قَالَ أَبُو عِيسَى هَذَا حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ صَحِيحٌ. وَفِى الْبَابِ عَنْ أَبِى سَعِيدٍ.
The Messenger of God, peace and blessings of God be upon him, said, “This is the son of Adam and this is his [specified] term,” and he placed his hand in front of him. He then extended his hand further away and said, “And there are his hopes... and there are his hopes... and there are his hopes...” (1)
(1) Man always falls short of his expectations because death overtakes him sooner than he anticipates.
