The Messenger of God, peace and blessings of God be upon him, was asked, "What equals Jihād (1) (in reward)?" He replied, "You cannot endure it!" The question was put to him two or three times and every time he replied, "You cannot endure it". On the third time he added, "The example of a striver in the way of God is that of a person who continuously offers prayer and observes fast; [and] who does not get tired of praying nor [of] fasting until the striver in the way of God returns [from Jihād]."
(1) Jihād is defined as any earnest striving for the sake of God that promotes righteousness and stands against wrong-doing. If it entails fighting, no woman, child or innocent civilian may be harmed, nor a tree cut down. Islām calls for moderation and tolerance, and abhors and forbids extremism, terrorism, oppression and discrimination.
