MUHAMMAD’S TEACHINGS TO MANKIND

ḤADĪTH OF THE DAY

“ 'Abdullāh Ibn-'Umar related that the Messenger of God, peace and blessings of God be upon him, said, "Whoever drinks an intoxicant, God will not accept his prayer for forty mornings; if he repents, God will accept his repentance. If he returns (to drinking), God will not accept his prayer for forty mornings; if he repents, God will accept his repentance. If he returns (again), God will not accept his prayer for forty mornings; if he repents, God will accept his repentance. If he returns for a fourth time, God will not accept his prayer for forty mornings; and if he repents, God will not accept his repentance but will make him drink from the River of Putrefaction." It was asked, "Abū-'Abdur-Raḥmān, (1) what is the River of Putrefaction?" He replied, "A river of pus of the people of Hell." Footnotes: (1) i.e. 'Abdullāh Ibn-'Umar, the narrator of the ḥadīth. ”

حَدَّثَنَا مَحْمُودُ بْنُ غَيْلاَنَ حَدَّثَنَا وَكِيعٌ حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ عَنْ أَبِى إِسْحَاقَ عَنْ هُبَيْرَةَ بْنِ يَرِيمَ عَنْ عَلِىٍّ أَنَّ النَّبِىَّ صلى الله عليه وسلم كَانَ يُوقِظُ أَهْلَهُ فِى الْعَشْرِ الأَوَاخِرِ مِنْ رَمَضَانَ. قَالَ أَبُو عِيسَى هَذَا حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ صَحِيحٌ.

حَدَّثَنَا قُتَيْبَةُ حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْوَاحِدِ بْنُ زِيَادٍ عَنِ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنِ الأَسْوَدِ عَنْ عَائِشَةَ قَالَتْ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم يَجْتَهِدُ فِى الْعَشْرِ الأَوَاخِرِ مَا لاَ يَجْتَهِدُ فِى غَيْرِهَا. قَالَ أَبُو عِيسَى هَذَا حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ صَحِيحٌ غَرِيبٌ.

'Ā'ishah [Bint-Abī-Bakr as-Siḍḍīq] said, "The Messenger of God, peace and blessings of God be upon him, used to strive (1) during the last ten [nights] of Ramaḍān more than any other time."
