Sunan at-Tirmithiy

The Prophet, peace and blessings of God be upon him, said, "Whoever does not abstain from falsehood in speech (1) and action (2) [while fasting], then God is in no need that he abstains from food and drink (3)." Footnotes: (1) This includes lying, false accusation, cursing, swearing, and similar forms of speech. (2) All evil deeds. (3) God, Almighty and Sublime is He, does not need anything from anyone. This hadīth indicates that the purpose of fasting is to restrain and improve one's self, failiure to do so, makes the fasting meaningless. Click on ḥadīth to read more
