MUHAMMAD’S TEACHINGS TO MANKIND

ḤADĪTH OF THE DAY

“ The Glorious Night of Determination (1) was mentioned in the presence of Abū-Bakrah who said, "I only seek it in the last ten nights [of Ramaḍan] as I heard the Messenger of God, peace and blessings of God be upon him, say, 'Seek it when there remains nine nights, when there remains seven nights, when there remains five nights, when there remains three nights or on the last night.'" Abū-Bakrah used to pray during the first twenty nights of Ramaḍān the same way he would during the rest of the year, but would strive [in his worship] in the last ten days. Footnotes: (1) The night during which the Qur'ān was first revealed to prophet Muhammad. It occurs on one of the last ten nights of Ramaḍān, although God only knows which night. The Qur'ān states that on this night, God determines the course of the world and all human affairs for the coming year. (2) Some interpretations state that it can be sought on the even numbered nights, as well.”

حَدَّثَنَا قُتَيْبَةُ حَدَّثَنَا هُشَيْمٌ عَنْ أَبِى بِشْرٍ عَنْ يُوسُفَ بْنِ مَاهَكَ عَنْ حَكِيمِ بْنِ حِزَامٍ قَالَ أَتَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم فَقُلْتُ يَأْتِينِى الرَّجُلُ يَسْأَلُنِى مِنَ الْبَيْعِ مَا لَيْسَ عِنْدِى أَبْتَاعُ لَهُ مِنَ السُّوقِ ثُمَّ أَبِيعُهُ قَالَ لاَ تَبِعْ مَا لَيْسَ عِنْدَكَ. قَالَ وَفِى الْبَابِ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عُمَرَ.

Ḥakīm Ibn-Ḥizām went to the Messenger of God, peace and blessings of God be upon him, and said, "Men come to me asking to buy things that I do not have. Should I conclude the sale, then buy [the goods] from the market, and deliver to them?" The Messenger of God, peace and blessings of God be upon him, replied, "Do not sell what you do not have(1)." حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ مَنِيعٍ حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ حَدَّثَنَا أَيُّوبُ حَدَّثَنَا عَمْرُو بْنُ شُعَيْبٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِى أَبِى عَنْ أَبِيهِ حَتَّى ذَكَرَ عَبْدَ اللَّهِ بْنَ عَمْرٍو أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم قَالَ لاَ يَحِلُّ سَلَفٌ وَبَيْعٌ وَلاَ شَرْطَانِ فِى بَيْعٍ وَلاَ رِبْحُ مَا لَمْ يُضْمَنْ وَلاَ بَيْعُ مَا لَيْسَ عِنْدَكَ. قَالَ أَبُو عِيسَى وَهَذَا حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ صَحِيحٌ . قَالَ أَبُو عِيسَى حَدِيثُ حَكِيمِ بْنِ حِزَامٍ حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ قَدْ رُوِىَ عَنْهُ مِنْ غَيْرِ وَجْهٍ. رَوَى أَيُّوبُ السَّخْتِيَانِىُّ وَأَبُو بِشْرٍ عَنْ يُوسُفَ بْنِ مَاهَكَ عَنْ حَكِيمِ بْنِ حِزَامٍ قَالَ أَبُو عِيسَى وَرَوَى هَذَا الْحَدِيثَ عَوْفٌ وَهِشَامُ بْنُ حَسَّانَ عَنِ ابْنِ سِيرِينَ عَنْ حَكِيمِ بْنِ حِزَامٍ عَنِ النَّبِىِّ صلى الله عليه وسلم. وَهَذَا حَدِيثٌ مُرْسَلٌ إِنَّمَا رَوَاهُ ابْنُ سِيرِينَ عَنْ أَيُّوبَ السَّخْتِيَانِىِّ عَنْ يُوسُفَ بْنِ مَاهَكَ عَنْ حَكِيمِ بْنِ حِزَامٍ.

The Messenger of God, peace and blessings of God be upon him, said, "It is not permissible to couple a loan with a sale (1), nor to set two conditions for a sale, nor to make a profit on what is not yet garanteed (2), nor to sell what you do not own."
