Abū-Sa'īd al-Khudrī said, "We used to travel with the Messenger of God, peace and blessings of God be upon him, while some among us were fasting and some were not. Those who were not fasting would not be angry at those who were; nor would those who were fasting be angry at those who were not. They used to regard whoever had the strength to fast and did so, as having done well; and likewise used to regard whoever felt weak and did not fast, as having done well." A woman came to the Prophet, peace and blessings of God be upon him, and said, "My sister died before fulfilling a due fast of two consecutive months." The Prophet asked,"Had your sister been indebted, would you have settled her debt?" "Sure," replied the woman. The Prophet said, "Then God's debt is more deserving(1)." Footnote (1): This shows that if a person dies while a period of fasting is due, then an heir of the deceased should complete the debt of fasting. Click on ḥadīth to read more

The Messenger of God, peace and blessings of God be upon him, said, "Three [situations] do not invalidate a person's fast: cupping (1), vomiting (2) and nocturnal emission (3)." Footnotes: (1) A treatment in which evacuated glass cups are applied to intact or scarified skin in order to draw blood toward or through the surface. (2) If vomiting overcomes someone while fasting, one should continue the fasting (if health allows) and there is no need to make up for that day. (3) Ejaculation during sleep (wet dream) does not break ones fast since dreams cannot be controlled. Click on ḥadīth to read more

The Messenger of God, peace and blessings of God be upon him, said, “Whoever forgetfully eats or drinks should not break his fast (1), for indeed, it is sustenance that God has provided for him.” (2) Footnotes (1) No matter how much a person eats or drinks inadvertently while fasting, once the fast is remembered, eating and drinking should cease immediately and the fast should be completed normally.
