“ ʻImrān Ibn-Ḥuṣayn said, “We have been forbidden to use cauterization.” ”

حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو كُرَيْبٍ وَمُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عُبَيْدٍ الْمُحَارِبِىُّ قَالاَ حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ زَكَرِيَّا بْنِ أَبِى زَائِدَةَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ خَالِدِ بْنِ سَلَمَةَ عَنِ الْبَهِىِّ عَنْ عُرْوَةَ عَنْ عَائِشَةَ رضى الله عنها قَالَتْ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم يَذْكُرُ اللَّهَ عَلَى كُلِّ أَحْيَانِهِ. قَالَ أَبُو عِيسَى هَذَا حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ غَرِيبٌ لاَ نَعْرِفُهُ إِلاَّ مِنْ حَدِيثِ يَحْيَى بْنِ زَكَرِيَّا بْنِ أَبِى زَائِدَةَ وَالْبَهِىُّ اسْمُهُ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ.

حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ بَشَّارٍ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو دَاوُدَ - وَهُوَ الطَّيَالِسِىُّ - حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ أَبِى الزِّنَادِ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ أَبَانَ بْنِ عُثْمَانَ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ عُثْمَانَ بْنَ عَفَّانَ رضى الله عنه يَقُولُ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم مَا مِنْ عَبْدٍ يَقُولُ فِى صَبَاحِ كُلِّ يَوْمٍ وَمَسَاءِ كُلِّ لَيْلَةٍ بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الَّذِى لاَ يَضُرُّ مَعَ اسْمِهِ شَىْءٌ فِى الأَرْضِ وَلاَ فِى السَّمَاءِ وَهُوَ السَّمِيعُ الْعَلِيمُ ثَلاَثَ مَرَّاتٍ فَيَضُرُّهُ شَىْءٌ. وَكَانَ أَبَانُ قَدْ أَصَابَهُ طَرَفُ فَالَجِ فَجَعَلَ الرَّجُلُ يَنْظُرُ إِلَيْهِ فَقَالَ لَهُ أَبَانُ مَا تَنْظُرُ أَمَا إِنَّ الْحَدِيثَ كَمَا حَدَّثْتُكَ وَلَكِنِّى لَمْ أَقُلْهُ يَوْمَئِذٍ لِيُمْضِىَ اللَّهُ عَلَىَّ قَدَرَهُ. قَالَ هَذَا حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ صَحِيحٌ غَرِيبٌ.
The Messenger of God, peace and blessings of God be upon him, said, "No bondsman (1) who recites three times in the [early] morning of each day, and three times in the [early] evening of each night, 'In the name of God: when His name is mentioned, nothing on earth nor in the heaven can cause harm; and He is the Hearing, the Omniscient.' will be harmed" Abān (one of the narrators of the ḥadīth (2)) had suffered a minor stroke, so the man (listening to him narrate the hadīth) kept staring at him. "What are you looking at?" Abān exclaimed. "Take heed! The ḥadīth is exactly as I have narrated it to you. However, I did not recite the supplication on that day, so God's decree befell me." حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ بْنُ وَكِيعٍ حَدَّثَنَا جَرِيرٌ عَنِ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ بْنِ سُوَيْدٍ عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ يَزِيدَ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ قَالَ كَانَ النَّبِىُّ صلى الله عليه وسلم إِذَا أَمْسَى قَالَ أَمْسَيْنَا وَأَمْسَى الْمُلْكُ لِلَّهِ وَالْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ وَلاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللَّهُ وَحْدَهُ لاَ شَرِيكَ لَهُ أُرَاهُ قَالَ فِيهَا لَهُ الْمُلْكُ وَلَهُ الْحَمْدُ وَهُوَ عَلَى كُلِّ شَىْءٍ قَدِيرٌ أَسْأَلُكَ خَيْرَ مَا فِى هَذِهِ اللَّيْلَةِ وَخَيْرَ مَا بَعْدَهَا وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ شَرِّ هَذِهِ اللَّيْلَةِ وَشَرِّ مَا بَعْدَهَا وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْكَسَلِ وَسُوءِ الْكِبَرِ وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ عَذَابِ النَّارِ وَعَذَابِ الْقَبْرِ. وَإِذَا أَصْبَحَ قَالَ ذَلِكَ أَيْضًا أَصْبَحْنَا وَأَصْبَحَ الْمُلْكُ لِلَّهِ وَالْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ. قَالَ هَذَا حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ صَحِيحٌ. وَقَدْ رَوَاهُ شُعْبَةُ بِهَذَا الإِسْنَادِ عَنِ ابْنِ مَسْعُودٍ لَمْ يَرْفَعْهُ.
In the evening, the Prophet, peace and blessings of God be upon him, used to say, "The evening has fallen upon us and so it has fallen upon God's eternal dominion. Praise is to God, there is no god except Allāh (1) alone; He has no partners." Al-Ḥasan Ibn-‘Obaydillāh said he thinks the Prophet, peace and blessings of God be upon him, added, "To Him belongs [all] dominion and to Him belongs [all] praise and He is over all things omnipotent. I ask You the good that is in this night and the good of what follows it, and I seek refuge in You from the evil of this night and the evil of what follows it. I seek refuge in You from laziness and senility; and I seek refuge in You from the torment of the Fire and the torment of the grave." And in the morning, he used to say the same, "Morning has dawned on us and so it has dawned on God's eternal dominion. Praise is to God..." Footnotes: (1) Allāh is the Arabic name for the One and Only God, the same God shared by all monotheistic faiths (the name Allāh is often used by Arabic-speaking Christians and Jews). The name Allāh encompasses all the divine names and attributes of the Lord of the worlds, and hence has vast scopes of meaning. It is for this reason that Muslims consider it unique. حَدَّثَنَا عَلِىُّ بْنُ حُجْرٍ حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ أَخْبَرَنَا سُهَيْلُ بْنُ أَبِى صَالِحٍ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ أَبِى هُرَيْرَةَ قَالَ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم يُعَلِّمُ أَصْحَابَهُ يَقُولُ إِذَا أَصْبَحَ أَحَدُكُمْ فَلْيَقُلِ اللَّهُمَّ بِكَ أَصْبَحْنَا وَبِكَ أَمْسَيْنَا وَبِكَ نَحْيَا وَبِكَ نَمُوتُ وَإِلَيْكَ الْمَصِيرُ. وَإِذَا أَمْسَى فَلْيَقُلِ اللَّهُمَّ بِكَ أَمْسَيْنَا وَبِكَ أَصْبَحْنَا وَبِكَ نَحْيَا وَبِكَ نَمُوتُ وَإِلَيْكَ النُّشُورُ. قَالَ أَبُو عِيسَى هَذَا حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ.
The Messenger of God, peace and blessings of God be upon him, used to teach his companions saying, "When morning dawns upon you , say, 'O God, by your leave, the morning has dawned upon us and by Your leave the evening has fallen upon us . By Your leave, we live and by Your leave we die, and to You is the [final] destination. And when evening falls upon you , say: O God, by Your leave, the evening has fallen upon us and by Your leave the morning has dawned upon us. حَدَّثَنَا مَحْمُودُ بْنُ غَيْلاَنَ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو دَاوُدَ قَالَ أَنْبَأَنَا شُعْبَةُ عَنْ يَعْلَى بْنِ عَطَاءٍ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ عَمْرَو بْنَ عَاصِمٍ الثَّقَفِىَّ يُحَدِّثُ عَنْ أَبِى هُرَيْرَةَ رضى الله عنه قَالَ قَالَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ مُرْنِى بِشَىْءٍ أَقُولُهُ إِذَا أَصْبَحْتُ وَإِذَا أَمْسَيْتُ قَالَ قُلِ اللَّهُمَّ عَالِمَ الْغَيْبِ وَالشَّهَادَةِ فَاطِرَ السَّمَوَاتِ وَالأَرْضِ رَبَّ كُلِّ شَىْءٍ وَمَلِيكَهُ أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ أَنْتَ أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ شَرِّ نَفْسِى وَمِنْ شَرِّ الشَّيْطَانِ وَشِرْكِهِ قَالَ قُلْهُ إِذَا أَصْبَحْتَ وَإِذَا أَمْسَيْتَ وَإِذَا أَخَذْتَ مَضْجَعَكَ. قَالَ أَبُو عِيسَى هَذَا حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ صَحِيحٌ.
Abū Bakr asked the Messenger of God, peace and blessings of God be upon him, "Messenger of God, instruct me something I could say when the morning dawns upon me and when the evening falls upon me." He replied, "Say, 'O God, Knower of the unseen and the witnessed, Originator of the heavens and the earth, Lord of everything and its Ultimate Sovereign, I bear witness that there is no god but You. I seek refuge in You from the evil of myself and from the evil of Satan and from his [calls for] polytheism.'"
