حَدَّثَنَا حُمَيْدُ بْنُ مَسْعَدَةَ حَدَّثَنَا زِيَادُ بْنُ الرَّبِيعِ حَدَّثَنَا حَضْرَمِىٌّ مَوْلَى آلِ الْجَارُودِ عَنْ نَافِعٍ أَنَّ رَجُلاً عَطَسَ إِلَى جَنْبِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ فَقَالَ الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ وَالسَّلاَمُ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ. قَالَ ابْنُ عُمَرَ وَأَنَا أَقُولُ الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ وَالسَّلاَمُ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ وَلَيْسَ هَكَذَا عَلَّمَنَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم عَلَّمَنَا أَنْ نَقُولَ الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ عَلَى كُلِّ حَالٍ. قَالَ أَبُو عِيسَى هَذَا حَدِيثٌ غَرِيبٌ لاَ نَعْرِفُهُ إِلاَّ مِنْ حَدِيثِ زِيَادِ بْنِ الرَّبِيعِ.
A man sneezed beside Ibn-‘Umar and said, "Praise be to God and peace be upon the Messenger of God." Ibn-‘Umar said, "I also say praise be to God and peace be upon the Messenger of God, but that is not what the Messenger of God, peace and blessings of God be upon him, taught us (to say when we sneeze). حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ بَشَّارٍ حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ وَعَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ مَهْدِىٍّ قَالاَ حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ عَنِ الأَشْعَثِ بْنِ سُلَيْمٍ عَنْ مُعَاوِيَةَ بْنِ سُوَيْدِ بْنِ مُقَرِّنٍ عَنِ الْبَرَاءِ بْنِ عَازِبٍ قَالَ أَمَرَنَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم بِسَبْعٍ وَنَهَانَا عَنْ سَبْعٍ أَمَرَنَا بِاتِّبَاعِ الْجَنَازَةِ وَعِيَادَةِ الْمَرِيضِ وَتَشْمِيتِ الْعَاطِسِ وَإِجَابَةِ الدَّاعِى وَنَصْرِ الْمَظْلُومِ وَإِبْرَارِ الْقَسَمِ وَرَدِّ السَّلاَمِ وَنَهَانَا عَنْ سَبْعٍ عَنْ خَاتِمِ الذَّهَبِ أَوْ حَلْقَةِ الذَّهَبِ وَآنِيَةِ الْفِضَّةِ وَلُبْسِ الْحَرِيرِ وَالدِّيبَاجِ وَالإِسْتَبْرَقِ وَالْقَسِّىِّ. قَالَ أَبُو عِيسَى هَذَا حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ صَحِيحٌ. وَأَشْعَثُ بْنُ سُلَيْمٍ هُوَ أَشْعَثُ بْنُ أَبِى الشَّعْثَاءِ وَأَبُو الشَّعْثَاءِ اسْمُهُ سُلَيْمُ بْنُ الأَسْوَدِ.
Al-Barā’ Ibn-‘Āzib said, "The Messenger of God, peace and blessings of God be upon him, ordered us to do seven [things] and forbade us from seven: He ordered us to follow the funeral procession (1), visit the ill, bless the sneezer, accept the invitation, support the oppressed, fulfill the oath (2) and return the greetings. He forbade us from seven [things]: [to wear] gold rings or gold earrings (3), [to drink in] silver vessels, to wear silk, thick or thin brocade and fabric that contains silk(4)." Footnotes: (1) Muslims are generally encouraged to follow funeral processions, even if they do not know the deceased. (2) One should act in a way that fulfills the other person's oath if that person's oath involves one's actions. (3) A prohibition for Muslim men only.
