ḤADĪTH OF THE DAY

The Messenger of God, peace and blessings of God be upon him, said, "Indeed, God has angels roaming the earth, in addition to those that record people's deeds. When they find people remembering God (1), they call out to each other, ‘Hurry to what you have been seeking!' So they come, and form circle upon circle around them extending to the lowest heaven (3). Then, God asks them, 'What were my bondsmen (2) doing when you left them?' They reply, 'We left them praising You, glorifying You and remembering You.'" The Messenger of God, peace and blessings of God be upon him, continued, "He asks, ‘Did they see Me?' They reply, 'No.'" He said, "He asks, 'What if they saw Me?'" He said, "They reply, 'If they saw You, they would praise you more, glorify you more, and remember you more.'" He said, "He then, asks, 'What are they asking for?' They reply, 'They are asking for Paradise.'" He said, "He asks, ‘Did they see it?' They reply, 'No.' He asks, ‘What if they saw it?'" He said, "They reply, 'If they saw it, they would ask for it with more persistence and aspire to it with more devotion" He said, "He then, asks, 'What are they seeking refuge from?' They reply, 'They are seeking refuge from Hell.'" He said, "He asks, 'Did they see it?' They say, 'No.' He asks, ‘ًWhat if they saw it?' They reply, 'If they saw it, they would flee it with more resolve, fear it with more intensity, and seek refuge from it with more persistence.'" He said, "He, then, says, 'I hold you witnesses that I have forgiven them.' They say, '[But] among them is a wrong-doer, who did not intend to join them, but came to get something he needed.' He replies, 'Those are the people whose companions never suffer.’” Footnotes: (1) A devotional practice that focuses on feeling God's presence in the different facets of life. It includes several kinds like practical evoking (obeying God's commandments), verbal evoking (supplications, praising, glorifying and exalting God), and evoking by the heart (meditation). (2) The heaven which forms the sky of this world. (4) Masculine pronouns are generally used in Arabic as a means for referring to both men and women when the meaning is left general and is not otherwise specified.

حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْمَلِكِ بْنِ أَبِى الشَّوَارِبِ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو عَوَانَةَ عَنْ أَبِى إِسْحَاقَ عَنْ عَاصِمِ بْنِ ضَمْرَةَ عَنْ عَلِىٍّ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم قَدْ عَفَوْتُ عَنْ صَدَقَةِ الْخَيْلِ وَالرَّقِيقِ فَهَاتُوا صَدَقَةَ الرِّقَةِ مِنْ كُلِّ أَرْبَعِينَ دِرْهَمًا دِرْهَمًا وَلَيْسَ فِى تِسْعِينَ وَمِائَةٍ شَىْءٌ فَإِذَا بَلَغَتْ مِائَتَيْنِ فَفِيهَا خَمْسَةُ الدَّرَاهِمِ. وَفِى الْبَابِ عَنْ أَبِى بَكْرٍ الصِّدِّيقِ وَعَمْرِو بْنِ حَزْمٍ. قَالَ أَبُو عِيسَى رَوَى هَذَا الْحَدِيثَ الأَعْمَشُ وَأَبُو عَوَانَةَ وَغَيْرُهُمَا عَنْ أَبِى إِسْحَاقَ عَنْ عَاصِمِ بْنِ ضَمْرَةَ عَنْ عَلِىٍّ وَرَوَى سُفْيَانُ الثَّوْرِىُّ وَابْنُ عُيَيْنَةَ وَغَيْرُ وَاحِدٍ عَنْ أَبِى إِسْحَاقَ عَنِ الْحَارِثِ عَنْ عَلِىٍّ. قَالَ وَسَأَلْتُ مُحَمَّدًا عَنْ هَذَا الْحَدِيثِ فَقَالَ كِلاَهُمَا عِنْدِى صَحِيحٌ عَنْ أَبِى إِسْحَاقَ يُحْتَمَلُ أَنْ يَكُونَ رُوِىَ عَنْهُمَا جَمِيعًا.
The Messenger of God, peace and blessings of God be upon him, said, "I have exempted you from almsgiving (1) on horses (2) and slaves so give alms on silver; one dirham for every 40 dirhams worth (3) of silver. No alms are due on 190 [dirhams worth of silver], but if you accumulate the equivalent of 200 dirhams, then 5 dirhams are due [as alms]. Footnotes: (1) (Zakāh) one of the five pillars of Islām: It is a calculated proportion of a Muslim's wealth that is paid annually for the benefit of the needy. It is due on certain assets, once their value reaches a certain threshold and the calculation varies according to the nature of the asset. (2) Commercial horses are business assets, and as such attract almsgiving. (3) Although only silver is mentioned, the ruling extends to money (currency, banknotes) and other wealth/assets. حَدَّثَنَا مَحْمُودُ بْنُ غَيْلاَنَ حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ أَخْبَرَنَا سُفْيَانُ عَنِ الأَعْمَشِ عَنْ أَبِى وَائِلٍ عَنْ مَسْرُوقٍ عَنْ مُعَاذِ بْنِ جَبَلٍ قَالَ بَعَثَنِى النَّبِىُّ صلى الله عليه وسلم إِلَى الْيَمَنِ فَأَمَرَنِى أَنْ آخُذَ مِنْ كُلِّ ثَلاَثِينَ بَقَرَةً تَبِيعًا أَوْ تَبِيعَةً وَمِنْ كُلِّ أَرْبَعِينَ مُسِنَّةً وَمِنْ كُلِّ حَالِمٍ دِينَارًا أَوْ عِدْلَهُ مَعَافِرَ. قَالَ أَبُو عِيسَى هَذَا حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ. وَرَوَى بَعْضُهُمْ هَذَا الْحَدِيثَ عَنْ سُفْيَانَ عَنِ الأَعْمَشِ عَنْ أَبِى وَائِلٍ عَنْ مَسْرُوقٍ أَنَّ النَّبِىَّ صلى الله عليه وسلم بَعَثَ مُعَاذًا إِلَى الْيَمَنِ فَأَمَرَهُ أَنْ يَأْخُذَ. وَهَذَا أَصَحُّ. حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ بَشَّارٍ حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ مُرَّةَ قَالَ سَأَلْتُ أَبَا عُبَيْدَةَ بْنَ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ هَلْ تَذْكُرُ مِنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ شَيْئًا قَالَ لاَ.
Mu'āth Ibn-Jabal said, "The Prophet, peace and blessings of God be upon him, delegated me over Yemen (to collect its (prescribed) alms(1)). Thus he ordered me to take from every thirty cows (2) a yearling bull or a yearling cow, and from every forty [cows] a heifer (3), and [to take] a Dinar (4) from each adult man(5), or a Ma'āfir (6) worth." Footnotes: (1)(Zakāt) One of the five pillars of Islām: A sum equivalent to 2.5% of the wealth stored over one year is paid by every Muslim annually for the benefit of the needy. (2) Here the word cow is used in its general meaning, i.e. any domestic bovine regardless of its sex. (3) The word heifer is used here to refer to a female cattle that is three years or older, regardless whether it had its first calf or not. (4) The Islamic Dinar is a specific weight of 22k gold (.917) equivalent to 4.25 grams. (Quoted from edinar) (5) Tax paid by non-Muslims living in a Muslim state, which is less than what Muslims pay annually in obligatory almsgiving. It is imposed on able-bodied non-Muslim men of military age. The tax is not levied on women, children, monks, the old, the sick, slaves, and the poor, and is subject to certain conditions. Non-Muslim citizens are free to practice their faith and to enjoy communal autonomy. They are entitled to protection from external aggression, and are exempt from military service, amongst other exemptions levied upon Muslim citizens. حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو كُرَيْبٍ حَدَّثَنَا وَكِيعٌ حَدَّثَنَا زَكَرِيَّا بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ الْمَكِّىُّ حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ صَيْفِىٍّ عَنْ أَبِى مَعْبَدٍ عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم بَعَثَ مُعَاذًا إِلَى الْيَمَنِ فَقَالَ لَهُ إِنَّكَ تَأْتِى قَوْمًا أَهْلَ كِتَابٍ فَادْعُهُمْ إِلَى شَهَادَةِ أَنْ لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللَّهُ وَأَنِّى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ فَإِنْ هُمْ أَطَاعُوا لِذَلِكَ فَأَعْلِمْهُمْ أَنَّ اللَّهَ افْتَرَضَ عَلَيْهِمْ خَمْسَ صَلَوَاتٍ فِى الْيَوْمِ وَاللَّيْلَةِ فَإِنْ هُمْ أَطَاعُوا لِذَلِكَ فَأَعْلِمْهُمْ أَنَّ اللَّهَ افْتَرَضَ عَلَيْهِمْ صَدَقَةً فِى أَمْوَالِهِمْ تُؤْخَذُ مِنْ أَغْنِيَائِهِمْ وَتُرَدُّ عَلَى فُقَرَائِهِمْ فَإِنْ هُمْ أَطَاعُوا لِذَلِكَ فَإِيَّاكَ وَكَرَائِمَ أَمْوَالِهِمْ وَاتَّقِ دَعْوَةَ الْمَظْلُومِ فَإِنَّهَا لَيْسَ بَيْنَهَا وَبَيْنَ اللَّهِ حِجَابٌ. وَفِى الْبَابِ عَنِ الصُّنَابِحِىِّ. قَالَ أَبُو عِيسَى حَدِيثُ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ صَحِيحٌ. وَأَبُو مَعْبَدٍ مَوْلَى ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ اسْمُهُ نَافِذٌ.
The Messenger of God, peace and blessings of God be upon him, sent Mu'āth to Yemen and said to him, "You are travelling to people of the Scripture (1), so call them to the declaration of faith; that there is no god except Allāh (2), and that I (Muḥammad) am the Messenger of God. If they respond to that, then inform them that God has prescribed for them five prayers throughout the day and the night. If they respond to that, then inform them that God has prescribed alms (3) to be taken from their rich and given to their poor. If they respond to that, do not take the best of their wealth, and beware of the supplication of the wronged, for there is no barrier between it and God." Footnotes: (1) The peoples who were sent the Torah and the Gospel (2) Allāh is the Arabic name for the One and Only God, the same God shared by all monotheistic faiths (the name Allāh is often used by Arabic-speaking Christians and Jews). The name Allāh encompasses all the divine names and attributes of the Lord of the worlds, having a vast scope of meanings, and for this it is considered unique by Muslims. حَدَّثَنَا قُتَيْبَةُ حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْعَزِيزِ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ يَحْيَى الْمَازِنِىِّ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ أَبِى سَعِيدٍ الْخُدْرِىِّ أَنَّ النَّبِىَّ صلى الله عليه وسلم قَالَ لَيْسَ فِيمَا دُونَ خَمْسِ ذَوْدٍ صَدَقَةٌ وَلَيْسَ فِيمَا دُونَ خَمْسِ أَوَاقٍ صَدَقَةٌ وَلَيْسَ فِيمَا دُونَ خَمْسَةِ أَوْسُقٍ صَدَقَةٌ. وَفِى الْبَابِ عَنْ أَبِى هُرَيْرَةَ وَابْنِ عُمَرَ وَجَابِرٍ وَعَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَمْرٍو.
The Prophet, peace and blessings of God be upon him said, "No alms (1) are due on fewer than five camels; no alms are due on less than five ounces [of silver] (2); and no alms are due on less than five awsuq (3). Footnotes: (1) (Zakāh): One of the five pillars of Islām: It is a calculated proportion of a Muslim's wealth that is paid annually for the benefit of the needy. It is due on certain assets, once their value reaches a certain threshold and the calculation varies according to the nature of the asset. (2) An ounce, here, is equivalent to forty dirhams.
